Power Lines Influence What Real Estate Gets Built

A new study shows how much new power companies want to build, what type of power and where, according to Bloomberg.
The study looked at the project connection queues for the nation’s grids. Bloomberg reported: “Today, developers of more than 10,000 energy projects are asking grid operators for permission to connect to their networks. All told, the projects represent more than 2 terawatts of total power generation—about 50 percent more than current generation capacity. Almost all of this is wind, solar or battery energy storage.”
The takeaway from the study isn’t surprising: Coal and natural gas power is declining while wind, solar, and battery energy storage are on the rise.
What this means for the built world is that planning and transmission wires are one of the biggest factors in determining what actually gets built, construction timelines, and project locations. The Inflation Reduction Act incentivized clean energy generation—the next hurdle is building the infrastructure and power lines the U.S. needs to meet its decarbonization goals.
