Once a building ground for battleships, the Brooklyn Navy Yard is now a hub for startups looking to test their green tech tech in an urban environment, the New York Times reports.
Here's a snapshot of the tech that startups are testing out there: a special filter captures and converts greenhouse gasses into a recyclable powder; carbon-capture equipment for not only boilers but lobbies and conference rooms; and sleek, damage-and-theft proof EV chargers designed for crowded cities.
The program, Yard Labs lets green technology companies test our their products and prepare for a market launch. It's a crucial "steppingstone to bigger adoption and scale," according to the New York Times article. Yard Labs represents a movement across New York City to create a green technology ecosystem and support startups focused on climate tech hardware.
“The climate crisis is real, our economic recovery is urgent, and we need to provide pipelines for workforce development for New Yorkers,” Maria Torres-Springer, the city’s deputy mayor for economic and workforce development, told the Times.
